Teacher Appreciation

This is a subject very near & dear to my heart. Of course, being a teacher I believe in thanking those that teach, love and endure my children all day long!

Here's what I came up with this year - Chalkboard (how appropriate!) flower pots:

Materials needed: terracotta flower pots (the kind with a rim), paint (I used DecoArt Patio Paint from Michaels that is specifically designed to paint on terracotta or concrete and will withstand the weather), Rustoleum chalkboard paint (got mine at Home Depot), foam paint brushes and a small art paint brush, small wooden dowels*, cute scrapbook paper*, and glue*.

I painted the rim of the pots in one of my 4 colors - I used raspberry, lime, turquoise & purple. I made sure to paint down a little bit under the bottom of the rim so that I made sure to have great coverage once the whole pot was painted.

Then, because my kids' school mascot is a zebra, I decided to free hand zebra stipes on the rim. This was NOT easy or for the impatient crafter! I Googled "zebra print" and then sort of tried to do my best to copy what I saw. I'm sure there is a stencil out there or something that would have made this part of the process much easier! Then I painted 2 coats of chalkboard paint on the bottom part of the post. In hindsight, I think I would have done 3, maybe even 4 coats because I noticed a couple of days after I had given the pots to their teachers that at least one of them was REALLY scratched up! My mom & I went to an amazing new nursery called Enchanted Gardens and got some pretty flowers to plant in the pots. I then made little stakes from tiny wooden dowels (Hobby Lobby), cute scrapbook paper that coordinated with my pots (also Hob Lob), and my trusty E-6000 glue. I printed Thanks For Helping Me Grow This Year in a cute font and stuck them into my flower pots.

I think they turned out pretty darn cute and their teachers LOVED them! Thanks to all the teachers out there for making a difference in kids lives. Enjoy your summer break! You deserve it!

Hide Those Plugs

After seeing this, I decided to try this myself for the kids' bathroom. Instead of painting the wood myself, I decided to take the easy/lazy way out and buy the premade, prepainted wooded cutouts. It was scandalously simple! This is what I ended up with:

The top plug is for a nightlight, but it was hard to get a good pic with it in.

So I bought these wooden cut-outs (prepainted) at Hobby Lobby for $.67 each.

I already had the outlet safety thinga-ma-doos (Free!) and I already had my

trusty E-6000 adhesive, but is runs about $4, I think.
LOVE this stuff!

So you glue the plug thingy on the back of the wooden cutout
Bada-bing, Bada-boo, you have yourself a cute & cheap outlet cover!
You could always use a larger wooden cut out & glue 2 plug thingys to the back to cover the whole outlet. Again, mine has a nightlight plugged into it, so no need.

Easy peasy! Scratch that off my list!

Framed Mirror

Dreaming of framing or re-framing rather our bathroom mirror. The previous owners slapped some baseboard up around it & called it "framed." Uh - no. I've seen many tutorials from other crafty folks, but here are the two I could see myself trying:

House of Smith's tutorial HERE - LOVE that she didn't have to use nails. Don't know if the old hubb-o will go for that. Or the one above is HERE from Show & Tell. Lovin' the thick black frame! These are 2 crafty ladies with impeccable taste!

My Craft To Do List

Have you ever seen something on one of the many AMAZING craft blogs and know immediately that you HAVE to try it? Me too. Happens to me ALL.THE.TIME! The problem is my to do list is SO looooong, so I mentally say I'm adding that to my list. Sadly, by the time I am ready to attempt one of those projects, I can't find the original post. Fuh-rus-trat-ing! SOOO....even if I end up being the only reader here, at least I will be able to find the projects I want to tackle!
